Welcome back!

Hello and welcome to year 5!

My name is Mr Sloan and I am very excited to announce that I will be your new class teacher for this coming year! I honestly can not wait to meet you all, as Mr Pattendan has told me how much of a wonderful class you were last year and how hard you all worked.

So, I will start off by telling you a little bit about myself, my interests in school and then, to finish, I will briefly explain what we will be learning about over the next year.

Like your move into year 5, this is a new beginning for me too, as this will be my first year teaching at Newall Green Primary! How exciting! I studied Classical Literature and Civiliation at the University of Birmingham for three wonderful years so, as you can all imagine, I have a real thirst for history, the world around us and, most importantly, reading! I believe the cheapest holiday you will ever experience can be found in a library. Books are an incredibly poweful tool to develop not just our reading and writing skills, but also our imaginations. Books allow us to travel back to ancient times, to see what life was like during the reign of the Roman emperors and the Egyptian pharo's, as well as providing a window into what life could be like in the future. Most importantly, they never fail to capture our interests and imaginations! We can dream with open eyes..

So, you must be wondering what we will be learning about up until October half term. For History we will be going back in time and looking at the War of the Roses, which was a series of battles between the House of Lancaster and the House of York, to determine who would become King or Queen of England. Next we will be studying the life of the Tudors, a british royal family who ruled England from 1458 to 1603.

In Geography we will be learning about rivers and how they operate, as well as the water cycle and how important it is to our way of life. In Science we will be looking at the function of our Solar Sytem, the Moon and just how small we are in comparison to other planets!

Finally, I just want to put you all at ease. I understand that moving classes can be scary, especially after such a difficult year with COVID. However, those of you who met me last year will know I am a happy, bubbly and hard working teacher who will do everything he can to get the best out of you. This is your education and I have a responsibilty for you to succeed and have fun at the same time.

I have some class rules which we will be looking at next week to ensure we can work to the best of our abilities and for me to teach to the best of my ability. You may find certain topics or areas of numeracy and literacy difficult, which is fine! All you need to do is put your hand up and ask an adult for help, simple. There are no silly topic related questions in my classroom, so I encourage you to ask as many as you can! If you need to talk to me I will always be here to listen and help in what ever way I can. Your education, health and safety are my main priorities, never forget that. Every passing moment is a chance to turn things around, a saying which will be used lots this year! :)

Mr Sloan
