Welcome to the Admissions page for Newall Green Primary School.
 
Our Admissions Policy explains how places are allocated for children starting in Reception, as well as how in-year admissions, waiting lists, appeals and SEND placements are managed.
 
Published Admission Number
 
Our Published Admission Number (PAN) for Reception is: 75 places from September 2026.
 
If there are more applications than places available, places will be allocated according to our oversubscription criteria.
 
How to apply for a Reception place
 
Applications for Reception places must be made through your home Local Authority, regardless of where you live or where the school you wish to apply for is located. If you live in Manchester, you should apply through Manchester City Council School Admissions:
 
 
If you live outside Manchester, you should apply through the Local Authority where you live.

Nursery Admissions
 
Applications for a place in our Nursery are made directly to the school.
 
Please contact the school office for information about Nursery places and how to apply.
 
Please note that:
 
Attending Nursery at Newall Green Primary School does not guarantee a place in our Reception class.
 
Parents/carers of children attending our Nursery must still apply for a Reception place through their home Local Authority when their child is due to start school.
 
 
Oversubscription Criteria
 
If there are more applications than available Reception places, places will be allocated in the following order of priority:
 
  1. Looked-after and previously looked-after children: Children who are looked after by a Local Authority and children who were previously looked after will receive priority. This also includes children who were looked after or in state care outside England and ceased to be in state care as a result of being adopted.
  2. Exceptional medical or social needs: Children with exceptional medical or social needs may receive priority where appropriate professional evidence has been provided. Parents/carers who wish to request priority under this category must provide supporting evidence from an appropriate professional, such as a doctor or social worker.
  3. Siblings: Priority will be given to children who have a sibling attending Newall Green Primary School when the child takes up their place and who live at the same address. This includes full and half siblings, adopted siblings, step-siblings and foster siblings. A child attending our Nursery does not count as a sibling for the purposes of this criterion.
  4. All other children: All other applicants will be considered in this category.
Distance from school
 
Within each category, priority is given to children who live closest to the school. Distance is measured in a straight line between the centre point of the child's permanent home address and the centre point of the school, using the Local Authority's measuring system. If two applicants live at exactly the same distance from the school and this results in more applicants than available places, a random allocation will be carried out by a senior officer outside the education service.
 
In-Year Admissions
 
An in-year admission is an application for a school place made outside the normal Reception admissions round.
 
For children with an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) that names Newall Green Primary School, admission will be managed through the appropriate SEND/EHCP process.
 
For other in-year applications:
  • If a place is available, it will be offered.
  • If there are more applications than available places, our oversubscription criteria will be applied.
  • Waiting lists will be ranked according to the oversubscription criteria rather than on a first-come, first-served basis.
If you are applying for an in-year place and live in Manchester, please contact Manchester City Council School Admissions: 
 
 
If you are moving into Manchester from another Local Authority, or from outside the UK, please make your application through the appropriate admissions process. Your child should continue attending their current school until a new school has confirmed that a place is available and provided a start date.
 
Waiting Lists
 
Reception
 
A waiting list for Reception will be maintained until 31 December of the intake year. If you wish your child to remain on the waiting list after this date, you will need to re-apply.
 
In-year admissions
 
For in-year applications, waiting lists will be maintained for the remainder of the academic year in which the application is made. Waiting lists are not operated on a first-come, first-served basis. The amount of time a child has been on the waiting list does not determine their position. Waiting lists are re-ranked whenever a new child is added, according to the school's oversubscription criteria.
 
Late Applications
 
Applications received after the published closing date will normally be treated as late applications.
 
  • Late applications will be considered after applications received on time, unless there is a valid reason for the application being late.
  • Late applications will be considered using the school's oversubscription criteria.

Deferred Entry and Part-Time Attendance
 
  • Parents/carers can request to defer their child's admission to Reception until the child reaches compulsory school age.
  • Parents/carers can also request that their child attends school part-time until they reach compulsory school age.
  • Where entry is deferred, the school place will be held for the child.
  • Parents/carers should contact the school and/or Local Authority for further information about deferred entry.
Summer-Born Children and Admission Outside the Normal Age Group
 
Parents/carers of children born in the summer may request that their child is admitted to Reception rather than Year 1 when they would normally start school. Parents/carers may also request admission outside their child's normal age group for other reasons.
 
All such requests will be considered in line with the School Admissions Code and the school's admission arrangements. Decisions will be communicated in writing.
 
Newall Green Primary School is responsible for making decisions about admission outside the normal age group in accordance with its admissions arrangements.
 
SEND and Resourced Provision
 
Children with an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) that names Newall Green Primary School are admitted through the appropriate EHCP/SEND process.
 
Places within our SEN unit or resourced provision are allocated by the relevant EHCP team according to the child's identified needs and Education, Health and Care Plan.
 
These places are not applied for through the standard Reception admissions process.
 
For further information about SEND admissions, please contact the relevant Local Authority SEND/EHCP team.
 
Admissions Appeals
 
If your child is refused a place at Newall Green Primary School, you have the right to appeal against the decision.
