At Newall Green Primary School, we want our children to discover the joy of language and develop a curiosity about the wider world. Learning French gives children the opportunity to communicate in another language, explore different cultures and develop the confidence to express themselves in new ways.

Throughout Key Stage 2, children build their French skills through engaging and practical experiences, developing their understanding of phonics, vocabulary and grammar alongside their ability to listen, speak, read and write. Games, songs, conversation and real-life situations help children use French purposefully and make language learning enjoyable and memorable.

We encourage children to take risks, have a go and learn from their mistakes, building confidence in their pronunciation and communication as their skills develop. They explore French-speaking cultures and make connections between languages, helping them appreciate the richness of linguistic and cultural diversity within our own school community and beyond.

Learning another language also helps children understand their own language more deeply and develops skills that can support them in learning further languages in the future. By the end of Key Stage 2, we want children to be able to use French with increasing confidence in practical situations, express their opinions, understand spoken and written language and continue their language-learning journey at secondary school.

Most importantly, we want our children to leave Newall Green Primary School with a positive attitude towards languages, the confidence to communicate and a genuine curiosity about the people, cultures and languages that make our world so diverse.
