Number
Below are some ideas, activities and resources you can try out at home to support learning about number. We hope you enjoy having-a-go!
Numbers:
- Number recognition - use numerals, dots, amounts for the children to become familiar with the number;
- Form numbers to enable the children to recognise them;
- Select the correct number to match a group of objects;
- Play more or fewer using groups of objects or pictures to compare amounts;
- Place numbers in order 0-10, 10-0;
- Number formations rhymes follow LINK.
Counting Activites:
- Count by rote - counting out loud starting at 0 upwards;
- Count forwards to 10;
- Count backwards from 10;
- Count up and down stairs;
- Ping pong counting: take it in turns to say the different numbers (learning odd and even numbers);
- Count fingers on hands;
- Sing counting songs;
- Start at different numbers and count to the target number, e.g. start at 6 and get to 10, then start at 3 and count to 10;
- subitise (recognise amounts correctly without counting - can count to check);
- Compare quantities.
Calculations:
- Add objects together to find the total;
- Add single digits together, 4 + 2 =;
- Subtract using objects by removing different amounts from the group;
- Subtract by crossing out the number you want to take away;
- Subtract single digits, 7 - 3 =;
- Finding one more and one less;
- Double the amount of objects so you have the same on both sides. How many altogether?;
- Halve the number of objects by sharing into two groups. How many does each group have?;
- Share different amountd between different groups (4 bananas between 2 people, 8 cars into 4 groups etc);
- Recognise and recall number bonds: pairs of numbers, e.g. 2 + 3 = 5, 4 + 1 = 5, 0 + 10 = 10, 1+ 9 = 10, 9 + 1 = 10, 5 - 3 = 2, 10 - 9 = 1.
